Need a lift? Try a little light! Valkee, a Finnish company founded in 2007 from the city of Oulu has come out with a new product that claims to treat seasonal affective disorder by shinning beams of light straight to your brain via your ears.

Depression is a serious disorder that many people struggle with, and it isn't always easy to combat. But this product reminds me of how simple the answer can be, the answer that helped me defeat depression many years ago. Light! Light triumphs darkness on every occasion. Its very definition is the absence of darkness; a simple concept that we take for granted.

This is true on so many levels - think of it this way: Negative thoughts can not exist in the realm of a positive mindset. Easy to say, harder to do, I understand. But it starts with changing just one thought, then the next, then getting into a pattern of 'light' thinking. The most powerful thing we own as human beings is our willpower (the power to choose)! You have the ability to choose your own thoughts. You are what you think you are - if you constantly choose dark thoughts then the darkness will overtake you. If you fill your mind with sunny thoughts, your life will reflect the light not only onto your situation, but those around you as well.

So be light-filled girls! Stop complaining, comparing, criticising. Life is what you make it.

Heidi Lakin is a new mum to the beautiful Emera (born June 2012) and wife to best friend, Chad Lakin. Her story is not uncommon, having struggled for over 10 years with self-image issues that developed into eating disorders, depression, obsessive compulsive behaviour and anxiety. Her success in overcoming such perplexing battles is less common, which is why she founded Blussh - an online initiative that focuses on equipping women to find their sense of worth and committing to a life of freedom. Heidi has a vision to help women through such issues, but more importantly to help prevent poor body-image, self-doubt and everything that follows, in our young girls.
